Heavy Equipment Operators are responsible for operating heavy machinery to perform various tasks such as construction, demolition and landscaping. The operator controls the machinery and ensures safety of other workers on the job site.

Heavy Equipment Operators are responsible for operating heavy machinery, such as cranes and bulldozers. They typically work in construction, mining, or manufacturing. The operator uses the machine’s controls to perform a variety of tasks, including lifting and moving materials, digging holes, clearing debris, and transporting heavy equipment.

The job requires physical strength and stamina to operate the machinery and work long hours under strenuous conditions. Trainees must be able to lift heavy loads repeatedly over extended periods of time, as well as take direction from supervisors on how to use complex machines safely.

FUNCTIONAL DUTIES:

  • Operate heavy machinery, including excavators, backhoes and bulldozers.
  • Follow safety procedures in order to avoid injuries or damage to equipment.
  • Load, unload and move materials using cranes and other equipment.
  • Perform routine maintenance on machinery, such as oil changes and tire rotation.
  • Drive trucks to deliver materials.
  • Transport materials and equipment.
  • Communicate with others to ensure work is performed effectively and efficiently.

REQUIREMENTS:

  • A high school diploma or equivalent.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license.
  • May need a commercial driver’s license (CDL) to operate a tractor-trailer truck or another large vehicle on public roads.
  • Must be able to read and understand English language.
  • A minimum of six months’ experience operating a backhoe, bulldozer, grader, loader, or skidsteer.
  • Must be able to lift heavy objects (50 lbs).
  • Ability to work outdoors in all types of weather conditions.
  • Be able to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Be able to adapt to new situations quickly and easily.
  • Able to operate hand tools such as drills, saws and screwdrivers.
