SUMMARY:
A Forestry Technician is responsible for the daily operation of a forest. They are highly skilled in forest management and may also be involved in research. They will monitor and analyze the condition of forests, identify any issues that may occur and recommend solutions, as well as implement these solutions. They will also perform tasks such as measuring trees and sampling soil.

FUNCTIONAL DUTIES:
- Perform tree planting, pruning and maintenance activities
- Perform forest inventory and management
- Develop forest maps, plans and inventories based on aerial photographs, field surveys and other sources of information
- Prepare reports, publications and maps for land management agencies using computer software
- Conduct on-site inspections and assessments
- Collect samples and data
- Calculate the volume of timber products harvested from forested lands
- Develop and implement programs to manage forests and other natural resources
- Collect data on tree species and their growth habits
- Maintain tools and machinery for forest management
- Perform field work, such as measuring soil samples, collecting plant and animal specimens, and locating potential sites for planting new trees
- Mark boundaries of timberland to inform land owners about boundaries
- Conducts chemical analyses on soil samples from different areas of property to check for chemical imbalances and nutrient deficiencies
- Recommends types of fertilizers and other soil amendments based on chemical analysis results
- Identifies insect infestations on trees or plants and recommends appropriate treatments
REQUIREMENTS:
- Bachelor’s Degree in forestry or related field
- Completion of a forestry technician training program, or equivalent experience
- Ability to work with tools, equipment, and machinery (particularly chainsaws, tractors, skidders)
- Ability to travel long distances by foot or vehicle to access job sites
- Ability to lift 50 pounds on a regular basis
- Must be able to work in a fast-paced environment and meet deadlines
- Be able to work independently, as well as in a team setting
- Must have excellent oral and written communication skills
